Cutting the calories being consumed may extend life. Leanne Redman of Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana and her colleagues assigned normal or calorie-restricted diets to 53 adults. Blood samples revealed a 20 percent drop in damage to cells caused by the by-products of metabolism, known as cellular oxidative stress, which is thought to be a hallmark of ageing. Redman thinks the body adapts to low-calorie diets by lowering its resting metabolic rate.
