Secessionism and the state: Violence in a non-violent conflict

  • One crucial event has taken place between our roundtable on “Secessionism and the State: Violence in a Non-violent Conflict” in May of 2017 and now, December of 2017, when I am about to submit my text for publication at the Catalan Review. Whereas my intervention, and the roundtable in general, built on the premise that the conflict between Catalan secessionism and the Spanish state was non-violent, police repression on October 1st and the subsequent imprisonment and exile of the Catalan government, inserted violence into the equation. In this text, I will reproduce the paragraphs that I read at the roundtable and I will supplement them with additions in italics that aim to account for the recent use of state violence.
