    The purpose of our survey is to highlight the aporetic character of Schelling’s treatment of the issue of history in his System of Transcendental Idealism. Such apory lies in the impossibility to make free will, which is the prerequisite for the phenomenalisation of liberty, compatible with necessity as a superior law unifying all individual will powers, and making them work toward the same purpose. The figures of improvisation and the tragic, through the prism of which Schelling envisions history coalesce into a form of historical pessimism which has two positive functions : to apprehend the practical in its absolute radicality and to understand the need for transcending itself into a philosophy of art.

    Nous nous proposons dans cette étude de dégager le caractère aporétique du traitement schellingien de la question de l’histoire dans le Système de l’idéalisme transcendantal. Cette aporie consiste en l’impossibilité de concilier le libre arbitre, condition de la phénoménalisation de la liberté, et la nécessité comme légalité supérieure unifiant les volontés particulières en fonction d’un but commun. Les figures de l’improvisation et du tragique par lesquelles Schelling pense l’histoire dessinent alors une forme de pessimisme historique, qui revêt une double fonction positive : penser le pratique dans sa radicalité absolue et comprendre la nécessité de son propre dépassement dans une philosophie de l’art.
