Contrary to a received idea, it is not possible to communicate using only one language, not even a “global” language, as English is claimed to be today. Cultural diversity, and therefore linguistic diversity, are in fact the central pillars of the multi-polar and massively interconnected world we inhabit today. The language of globalisation is not “globish” but rather multilingualism and translation. For we are witnessing a rapid re-babelisation of the world that represents a shift in perspective, both in communicational and geopolitical terms. The stakes of this change for the contemporary world are only just becoming clear and can only be understood within a firmly interdisciplinary framework.

Contrairement à une idée reçue, on ne saurait communiquer par l’intermédiaire d’une seule langue, fût-elle « planétaire », comme on le prétend aujourd’hui au sujet de l’anglais. Dans le monde multipolaire et massivement interconnecté qu’est le nôtre, c’est au contraire la diversité culturelle, et, partant, la diversité linguistique, qui en constitue l’axe central. La langue de la mondialisation, ce n’est pas le globish, mais le plurilinguisme et la traduction. Car nous assistons désormais à une rebabélisation accélérée du monde qui constitue un renversement de perspective à la fois communicationnel et géopolitique dont nous commençons seulement à percevoir tous les enjeux pour le monde contemporain et qui ne saurait être appréhendé que dans un cadre résolument interdisciplinaire.
