    Es el Baratillo un corpus novohispano importante por su contenido, temáticamente muy variado debido a la notable y diversa cultura del autor y a su enfoque satírico sobre la administración colonial y la degradación que advierte en la sociedad mexicana de la época. Pero de especial interés es el aspecto lingüístico de esta obra, tanto por la riqueza de datos que su análisis pueda reunir, como por las agudas observaciones de quien la compuso acerca de la variedad normativa y dialectal del español americano y europeo, cuyas noticias en este artículo van enmarcadas con las que otros ilustrados de las dos orillas del Atlántico por entonces aportaron.

    The Baratillo is an important New Spanish corpus for its thematically varied content, thanks to the author’s cultural diversity and his satirical focus on colonial administration and the degradation that he witnessed in Mexican society at that time. But it is this work’s linguistic aspect that is of particular interest: analysis of the text reveals a wealth of information, as do the author’s sharp observations on the normative and dialectical variety of American and European Spanish, the news of which this article frames with observations that other Enlightenment thinkers on both sides of the Atlantic made on the subject.
