  Far from having simply merged logic and ontology in his interpretation of inherence in the Discourse, Leibniz ceaselessly examined the relation between the two. Thus, in the years following the Discourse, he tried to construct a unified theory of inesse that would be capable of accounting for its different interpretations—logical, phenomenological, mathematical, and ontological in the proper sense. This theory turns our to be a sort of general mereology, linked to a theory of conditions, whose applications range from the foundation of geometrical concepts to the monadological theory of bodies. It is within the context of this theory that Leibniz strives to clarify the ontological import of predication.

  Loin d’avoir simplement confondu logique et ontologie dans son interprétation de la relation d’inhérence dans la métaphysique du Discours, Leibniz n’a jamais cessé de s’interroger sur cette relation. Ainsi, dans les années après le Discours, il a essayé de construire une théorie unifiée de l’inesse, capable de rendre compte de ses différentes interpétations – logiques, phénoménologiques, mathématiques ou ontologiques au sens propre. Cette théorie se présente comme une sorte de méréologie générale, liée à une théorie des conditions, dont les applications vont de la fondation des concepts de la géométrie à la théorie monadologique des corps. Leibniz s’y efforce de clarifier la signification ontologique de la prédication.
