    Miles de subsaharianos cruzan el Sáhara cada año para intentar alcanzar Europa, utilizando la ruta migratoria que atraviesa Níger y Libia. Tras la caída de Gadafi en 2011, esta «frontera sur» de la Unión Europea se ha vuelto más difícil de controlar, y los migrantes sufren terribles abusos que han llegado a las portadas de los medios de comunicación. El norte de Níger, pobre e inestable, depende actualmente de la actividad económica generada por los migrantes en tránsito un recurso importante también en la actual Libia, del que se lucran las milicias que compiten por el control de distintas zonas del país. Pero esta situación no es sólo producto de la anarquía tras la revolución libia:

    la pobreza de Níger, los drásticos cambios políticos en Libia y las políticas migratorias europeas han ido dando forma a esta ruta a lo largo de varias décadas.

    Thousands of Sub-Saharans cross the Sahara every year trying to reach Europe, using the migration route that crosses Niger and Libya. After Gaddafi’s fall in 2011, this “southern border” of the European Union has become more difficult to control, and migrants there suffer terrible abuses that have reached the front pages of the media. The north of Niger, poor and unstable, depends today on the economic activity generated by transit migrants—an important resource for Libya’s militias as well. But this situation is not only the result of the anarchy that followed the Libyan revolution: Niger’s poverty, the drastic political changes in Libya and Europe’s migration policies have shaped this route during several decades.
