Resumen de L’aventura de Mansfield Park

In this text I shall revisit the challenge that I experienced while translating Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park. When translating a classic it is necessary to examine the language of that period, to find the right tone and linguistic register, to decide which relevant phrasing should be used... But these difficulties don’t only exist on the linguistic level: one has to empathize with the author’s mentality and the historical context without falling into the temptation to modernize the novel or put too much of ourselves into it.

En aquest text rememoro el repte que em va comportar la traducció de Mansfield Park de Jane Austen. Per traduir un clàssic cal fer recerca sobre l’idioma de l’època, trobar el llenguatge i el registre lingüístic més adequats, decidir quins tractaments utilitzarem... Però les dificultats no es limiten a la llengua, sinó que també hem d’empatitzar amb la mentalitat de l’autor i el context històric sense caure ni en la temptació de modernitzar la novel·la ni de posar-hi massa de nosaltres.
