  • Resumen
    • Latest decline in trade; Continuation of downtrend; Sharp drop in unit price China's spherical graphite exports have slowed down in February after a month-on-month (m-o-m) surge in January, as value also declined on the back of falling unit prices.

Total exports of spherical graphite - including uncoated and coated material - stood at 2,467 tonnes in February for a value of $7.39m, according to China Customs data.

The latest monthly statistics point to a decrease against January, when exports rose to over 2,700 tonnes worth $9.24m.

A similar trend could be seen at this time last year, when February 2016 exports dropped against the previous month. Last year's exports then rebounded, and fared strongly between May and July: in July, volumes hit almost 3,400 tonnes.

In terms of pricing, the average unit price for spherical graphite (under HS code 25041091) decreased 32% m-o-m in February, to $2,997/tonne, compared with $3,376/tonne the previous month.

IM 's price for spherical [99.95% C, 15 micron, FOB China] graphite was at $2,250- 2,700/tonne 30 March.

Delegates talking to IM at the recent Graphite & Graphene conference in Berlin pointed to an ongoing issue of overcapacity affecting the spherical graphite market as the leading cause of price stagnation.
