Tradicionalmente se ha considerado que el antiguo reino de Ugarit, como mínimo durante el período que cubren los archivos de la ciudad (ca. 1350-1200 a. C.), fue un reino ajeno al ámbito de la guerra. De acuerdo con esta postura, Ugarit se habría preocupado esencialmente por el comercio y las relaciones internacionales, eludiendo, siempre que le fue posible, implicarse en los frecuentes conflictos bélicos de la zona. Como resultado de esa tendencia, Ugarit resultaba ser un oasis de paz en medio de un mundo a menudo turbulento. En el presente artículo repasaremos las evidencias y los argumentos que han llevado a formular esos planteamientos, al tiempo que analizaremos algunas posibilidades alternativas a ese discurso

It has traditionally been thought that the ancient kingdom of Ugarit, at least during the period covered by the archives of the city (ca. 1350-1200 BC), was a kingdom uninvolved in war. According to this interpretation, Ugarit would essentially have been concerned with trade and international relations, avoiding, whenever possible, involvement in the frequent armed conflicts in the area. Ugarit seemed therefore to be an oasis of peace in the midst of an often turbulent world. The present article reviews the evidence and the reasoning that have led to the formulation of this peaceful portrait, while analyzing some possible alternatives to this vision.
