Analysis of time used in the preparation of cytostatics with closed systems

  • Objective: To evaluate the impact of the implementation of Closed-system Drug Transfer Device on the time of preparation of cytostatic preparations in the Intravenous Therapies Unit. Method: Prospective observational study. The following information was collected: operators and their previous experience in the cytostatic preparation, date and time of beginning and end of the preparation, and number of preparations obtained from the Farmis® program to evaluate the preparation time with the Phaseal® device. The preparation time of the Phaseal® Closed System was compared to the conventional Codan Spike® drug transfer system. Results: A total of 6, 599 preparations were prepared. 3, 232 were made with the Codan Spike® and 3, 367 with the Phaseal® BD device. The preparation time with the conventional system was 3.63 minutes versus 4.53 minutes with the closed drug transfer system, presented a difference of 56 seconds. There was a statistically significant increase in preparation time with the closed system. In addition, it was observed that after the training the operators with previous experience of less than one year matched the preparation time with that of the most expert operators. Conclusion: The study shows an increase in preparation time of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes per 100 preparations with the use of closed systems. In addition, it is observed that operators with previous experience of more than one year in the preparation of cytostatics present shorter preparation times
