The Damiourgoi in the Cities of the Peloponnese and the Achaian Koinon

    It is commonly believed that in not a few cities of the Peloponnese, the damiourgoi as executive officials appeared for the first time in the Hellenistic period under the influence of the Achaian koinon. It is impossible, however, to find even a single indisputable example of a Peloponnesian polis, except for Sparta, in which this magistracy had not existed before the rise of the Achaian federation. Nevertheless, by the mid-second century BCE, the membership of some cities in the koinon may have resulted in a certain change of the damiourgoi's functions and their position with regard to other officials

    On pense communément que dans bon nombre de cités du Péloponnèse, les damiourgoi en tant qu’agents de l’exécutif sont apparus pour la première fois au cours de la période hellénistique sous l’influence du koinon achéen. Toutefois, il est impossible de trouver même un seul exemple d’une polis péloponnésienne, hormis Sparte, dans laquelle cette magistrature n’existait pas avant l’essor de la fédération achéenne. Il se peut néanmoins que dans la seconde moitié du deuxième siècle de l’ère préchrétienne l’appartenance de certaines cités au koinon ait eu pour conséquence une certaine modification des fonctions des damiourgoi et de leur position par rapport à d’autres magistrats
