This paper analyzes two trends that appear in the verge of 14th and 15th centuries, as well as their political consequences. On the one hand, it synthesizes the vast influence achieved by the work of Cornelius Agrippa, a defender of a suggestive pantheism which reaches its zenith in the consideration of the equality of all living beings -with undeniable theological repercussions-, and creates an atmosphere that may be calibrated in the Servetian work.

And, on the other hand, it tackles the equally strong irruption of Pyrrhonist scepticism due to the knowledge of Sextus Empiricus' work, enthusiastically endorsed by Montaigne.

Such references, which advocate for the respect for difference and the dissident, fuel the debates on political and religious tolerance, soon confronted by theological and philosophical dogmatisms –of which Calvin or Descartes are exemplary samples.
