Estudio comparativo de los primeros tratados de puntuación en lengua inglesa (1672-1704): terminología y función de la puntuación

    Después de dos siglos de incluir breves capítulos sobre puntuación en gramáticas y manuales escolares ingleses de los siglos XVI y XVII, en el último cuarto del siglo XVII la puntuación parece adquirir entidad suficiente como para ser el centro de interés de un volumen y en 1672 sale a la luz la primera obra cuyo título anuncia aportar reglas sobre el uso de la puntuación.

    En las gramáticas y manuales en los que se habían gestado estas reglas de uso, los distintos signos se explicaban, principalmente, desde un punto de vista gramatical o sintáctico; sin embargo, a mediados del siglo XVII y principios del XVIII, se les atribuye una función que siempre ha estado vinculada a la lectura oral: la función retórica. Esta dualidad en la forma de entender la puntuación ha sido y continúa siendo tema de discusión entre muchos estudiosos que intentan dilucidar cuál es realmente su función primaria. Este trabajo pretende aportar algo de luz en este sentido a partir del estudio, el primero hasta el momento, de los tres primeros tratados sobre el uso de la puntuación publicados en Inglaterra alrededor del último cuarto del siglo XVII y principios del XVIII.

    El análisis de estos volúmenes permitirá, en primer lugar, determinar la importancia otorgada a la puntuación y su finalidad; en segundo lugar, hacer un estudio comparativo de los distintos signos de puntuación empleados en los tres tratados y los distintos términos utilizados para denominarlos, y, finalmente, identificar las fuentes de los ejemplos que los autores utilizaban para ilustrar el uso de los signos de puntuación.

    During the 16th and the 17th centuries, textbooks and handbooks of English grammar had been including brief sections on punctuation, but it is only at the end of the 17th century that punctuation becomes the focus of interest of a single volume; thus, the first work whose title announces rule providing guidance on the use of punctuation is published in 1672.

    Those grammars and handbooks that had dealt with these rules had presented punctuation marks from a grammatical or syntactic perspective; however, in the mid 17th century and beginnings of the 18th century, a new function, closely related to oral reading, is attributed to these marks: the rhetorical function. This duality in the way of assuming punctuation has been and still is a subject of concern among many scholars who try to elucidate its ultimate primary function.

    In this sense, this study intends to be the first contribution so far to the understanding of the first three treatises on the use of punctuation printed in England around the last quarter of the 17th century and the beginnings of the 18th century. This analysis will allow, first, to establish the importance and the different functions attributed to punctuation; second, to carry out a comparative study of the different punctuation marks used in these three treatises and the different terms applied to name them; and, finally, to identify the sources of the examples included to illustrate the use of these punctuation marks.
