  • Due to an error in the preparation of this interview, the word ribosome was used mistakenly in the first section, where polymerase should have been employed. This error has been corrected and the relevant section now reads:

    It started in biology class in high school, when my teacher explained to us that polymerases attach to the DNA to initiate transcription. I just couldn’t understand what ‘motivated’ the polymerase to go and attach to the DNA. How did it ‘know’ to do that? My teacher didn’t know, and said that this might not be known yet. I found this a very unsatisfying answer.
