Resumen de Making Words in Two Languages: A Prosodic Account of Japanese-English Language Mixing
This paper attempts to provide an account of so-called “word-internal codeswitching,” instances where lexemes are taken from one language to combine with affix-like elements from another. Previous analyses of codeswitching at the lexical or sublexical level have focused on syntactic and morphosyntactic principles within generative grammar as well as from psycholinguistic perspectives as possible constraining factors. In this paper, based on data largely from Japanese-English bilingual utterances as well as from other language pairs, I argue that two factors determine the proper selection and combination of morphemes coming from different languages: the prosodic nature of morphological and prosodic hosts, and the selectional restrictions on bound elements.
