    Los relatos de viaje nos brindan información que ha sido procesada por un testigo que, al ser ajeno al espacio que visita, lo descubre a partir de su propio horizonte de expectativas y lo describe mediante operaciones discursivas en las que el punto de comparación es siempre el que se ha dejado atrás. De tal forma que, en la recuperación de su experiencia, actualiza el espacio cultural del que procede ante el nuevo espacio al que se enfrenta. Los textos de Flandrau y Gilliam enmarcan la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Uno de los libros recoge las experiencias en la década de los cuarenta y el otro, es producto de una larga estancia en México; abarca los últimos años del siglo XIX y los primeros del siglo XX. Gilliam relata sus percepciones del México inseguro de los tiempos de Santa Anna, mientras que Flandrau es testigo de una nación que abre sus puertas a la migración extranjera para propiciar el desarrollo del campo en la época de Porfirio Díaz. Ambos autores tienen como finalidad consignar sus experiencias a través de un relato de viaje, y brindan a sus conciudadanos un texto que les dé información sobre un territorio y una forma de vida que les es ajena.

    Travelogues give us information that has been gathered by a witness who, while being from outside the place he or she is visiting, discovers things from his or her own horizon of expectations and describes things by way of discursive operations in which the point of comparison is always from what one has left behind. Thus, in the recuperation of the writer's experience, he or she updates the cultural space from which he or she has come with the new space in which he or she now stands before. The works of Flandrau and Gilliam frame the second half of the nineteenth century. One of the books records experiences in the 1940's, and the other book is the product of a long stay in México that covers the last years of the nineteenth century and the first years of the twentieth. Gilliam relates his perceptions of an insecure México during the time of Santa Anna, while Flandrau is witness to a nation that has opened its doors to foreign immigration in order to promote economic development in rural áreas during the time of Porfirio Díaz. The objective of both authors was to record their experiences in the form of a travelogue, and offer their fellow citizens texts that provide information about a land and a lifestyle that is now in the past.
