Resumen de La minería del hierro en la zona de la Sierra de la Culebra y sus conexiones con el poblado del Castillón durante el periodo tardoantiguo en la provincia de Zamora

  Desde el año 2007 hasta la actualidad se viene desarrollando en el poblado tardoantiguo de El Castillón (Santa Eulalia de Tábara, Zamora), un trabajo de investigación arqueológica que se ha centrado en el estudio y análisis de la minería del hierro en esta zona. Registrándose un poblado fortificado, correspondiente a los siglos V – VI d.C., que presenta un importante sistema defensivo y un complejo entramado urbanístico, donde sobresale la presencia de un sector metalúrgico, en el que se han identificado diversos hornos de reducción de mineral de hierro.

  Archaeological field investigations have been carried out in the Late Roman settlement of El Castillón (Santa Eulalia de Tábara, Province of Zamora, Castilla y León) since 2007, this research has focused on the study and analysis of metallurgical resources in the area, especially iron. The settlement offers the sample of a late roman urban plan of the 5th and 65th centuries AD with broad streets, open areas, public spaces and building clusters. Within the enclosure several areas with different economic purposes have been unearthed and among them it is remarkable the existence of a metallurgical district, so called because of the location of three furnaces used to obtain iron in a process of reduction from primary minerals. The excavation at the metallurgical district evidences a continuity along the settlement’s occupation of two different phases, yet two of the furnaces are stratigraphically over the third and oldest one of them. The amount of slags and wastes from processing the iron reaches the 90 kilogrammes in the most visible and latest phase of usage of the metallurgical structures.
