  • As if poaching, habitat loss and climate change aren't bad enough, wild chimpanzees face a new, deadly peril: a virus that causes common colds in us. The threat has been exposed after respiratory disease struck chimps in 2013. The outbreak occurred in the Kanyawara community in Kibale National Park, Uganda. Out of a population of 56 chimps, five died--almost 10%. A post-mortem on a 2-year-old chimp called Betty, who died of pneumonia, showed human rhinovirus C was to blame. Genes from the virus were found in Betty's fluid-filled lungs and respiratory tract. No other infectious agents were detected
