Resumen de Alien mountains can appear in planet shadows

John Wenz

  • There are stunning mountain ranges on Earth, Mars and even Pluto. Moiya McTier at Columbia University in New York says that by analyzing the dip in a stars light as a planet passes in front of it, they could discern details about the planet's landscape. She presented her research at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society on 11 January. The rocky planets in our solar system are not perfectly round: there are mountains, canyons and craters. McTier used US Geological Survey maps of these planets and the moon to determine what their light curve around the sun would look like
