    • The Belgian chemicals business hopes the addition of the Energain brand to its portfolio will strengthen its battery solutions capabilities.

Solvay AG has acquired the Energain high voltage lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery technology from DuPont E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. (DuPont).

Launched by DuPont in 2010, Energain comprises a group of nanofiber-based separators aimed at generating more power and longer life for hybrid electric (HEV) and electric vehicles (EVs).

In a statement, Solvay noted the technology would strengthen its capabilities to develop further innovative high-voltage solutions for Li-ion batteries.

Du Hua, president of Solvay's special chem business unit, said in a statement in February: "Achieving high energy at an affordable cost, without compromising safety is a key objective of the Li-ion battery industry. With the addition of Energain to our portfolio, we are offering new solutions to our partners to reach their high voltage goals".

At the launch of the Energain technology in 2010, DuPont said it would be the first nanofiber-based polymeric battery separator that boosted the performance and safety of Li-ion batteries.

It allows power to be increased by 15-30%, increases battery life by up to 20% and improves battery safety by providing stability at high temperatures, according to DuPont.
