Some fifteen years ago the concept of The Netherlands Collections was introduced; the totality of public collections in the Netherlands for which the community is willing to take responsibility. With the concept of The Netherlands Collection a context has been created that transcends individual museums and challenges them to remove – in theory – the institutional boundaries between collections. By using the concept museums are treating the collections together as a single, large reservoir of heritage. Who owns an item or collection is not as important as the question of how collections can make the best contribution to enhancing the quality of the national collection as a whole.
