The article examines the path undertaken by the Italian Library Association (AIB) to offer its associates opportunities for professional empowerment. This aim was pursued by fostering continuing professional development practices and developing blended learning models as means for the application of the principles announced in documents such as the “Guidelines for continuing professional development” and the “Directions on continuing professional development”, based on the current legislation in the European Union and in Italy. Moreover, the AIB portfolio is presented, a model constituting a new tool for the information professionals towards the recognition and the validation of competences.
