The article is both a reasoned description of the three chapters of the book and a meta-reflection on the enlightening effects that a well-constructed portfolio of competences can have on the job and on para-professional choices. The ability to turn “innovation” into practice cannot stop on the threshold of IT skills, but it must influence the method the librarian adopts to build and manage his/her own knowledge. Moreover, the validation by the related technical-scientific community constitutes a valuable asset. Moving from international guidelines, the book helps us enhance, in every single professional step forward, those non-formal competences enabling a real and satisfactory process of long-life development.
