Os “principios elementares da arithmetica” nas escolas da corte imperial

    In this article, I present a study on arithmetic instruction in schools of the Imperial Court, in which I seek to investigate how this instruction was carried out at the time of institutionalization of the school system. In order to better understand the existing studies in this field, I have selected for analysis, among other sources, the Guia Pedagógico de calculo mental (Pedagogical Guide to Mental Arithmetic), a book aimed at training professors, translated and adapted in Brazil. In doing so, I also seek to learn about some of the practices that government authorities would like to see future teachers implementing in this regard. In the short analysis conducted, it was possible to observe that arithmetic was gradually established as a fundamental school subject, integrating it into the corpus of subjects constituting basic children’s education, but not without disputes among the different actors in the field of education who sought to establish themselves in power.

    Nesse artigo apresento uma pesquisa acerca do ensino da aritmética nas escolas da Corte Imperial, na qual busco investigar como se dava esse ensino em um momento de institucionalização da ordem escolar. Para compreender melhor os projetos existentes para este campo do saber, elejo para análise, entre outras fontes, um livro destinado à formação dos professores, o “Guia Pedagógico de calculo mental” traduzido e adaptado no Brasil. Desta forma, almejo também aprender parte das práticas que as autoridades governamentais gostariam de ver imbuídas em seus futuros mestres referentes ao tema. Na breve análise realizada foi possível perceber que a aritmética foi se estabelecendo como um saber escolar fundamental, integrando-se ao corpus de saberes constituintes da formação básica da infância, mas não sem disputas entre os diferentes sujeitos que atuavam no campo educacional e que buscavam se estabelecer no poder.
