The attribution of Nencia da Barberino to Lorenzo dei Medici is a controversial issue. The poem was attributed to him by Benedetto Varchi in 1570. However, in 1934 Federico Patetta, a law scholar, found and published the third version of the work, composed in 39 octaves, and put forward the idea that it consisted of octaves written by unknown authors and then pieced together by Lorenzo the Magnificent. This hypothesis was later revised by Patetta who rejected both the “assembly” idea and Lorenzo dei Medici’s paternity. There ensued a long scholarly debate with varying points of view. Today, most are willing to attribute the poem to Lorenzo dei Medici himself
