  • Resumen
    • Green Party MP Caroline Lucas publicly backed the remain vote in what the party described as a "climate referendum". Earlier in June, Lucas penned an article for UK newspaper The Guardian together with ex-diplomat and climate expert, John Ashton, imploring the British public to vote against Brexit, or risk leaving the door open for unregulated hydraulic fracturing (fracking).

UK Onshore Oil and Gas (UKOOG), which represents the interests of oil and gas companies in the UK, has expressed its support for the steps taken by the government. The organisation strongly criticised existing UK policy when, in June, Lancashire County Council rejected a fracking application from energy firm Cuadrilla Resources Plc for its Roseacre Wood site, despite a recommendation by planning officers from the council that activity should go ahead.

Encouraging fracking policies may enable the UK to become self-sufficient in its energy needs, but exploration and development consultancy Rocksolve has warned that leaving the EU may may have a negative impact due to a possible loss of the free travel arrangement the UK currently enjoys. This could increase bureaucracy and employer costs at a time when oil and gas firms are attempting to keep costs down.
