  Se parte de la idea de que los textos históricos pueden ser estudiados desde el análisis del discurso. Se intentará descubrir e interpretar el uso de las herramientas de atenuación de las modalidades presentes en la obra principal de un científico español de finales del siglo XVIII que encontró en los valles de Nueva Granada un lugar ideal para la explotación de la quina.

  Este científico se llama José Celestino Mutis y su obra se titula El arcano de la quina que es un estudio científico en donde el autor intenta convencer al lector de la validez de sus ideas y la invalidez de otras y para ello utiliza una serie de elementos lingüísticos que enervan sus afirmaciones y sus prescripciones.

  La metodología empleada es ecléctica porque, a partir del examen cuantitativo de los elementos atenuadores, se comenta de forma cualitativa la técnica argumentativa de atenuar la modalidad de lo dicho, pues, ambas perspectivas son necesarias para el estudio de la variación lingüística en el análisis de las tradiciones discursivas.

  Considerando este texto como argumentativo, porque posee las categoría fundamentales de estos, tesis y argumentos, se hace un repaso rápido a la gramática argumental formulada por Lo Cascio (1998) que es, sin duda, el punto de partida de este trabajo.

  It starts from the idea that the historical texts can be studied from the discourse analysis. It will try to discover and interpret the use of the attenuation tools of the modalities present in the main work of a Spanish scientist of the late eighteenth century who found in the valleys of Nueva Granada an ideal place for the exploitation of the quina.

  This scientist is called José Celestino Mutis and his work is entitled The arcano de la quina which is a scientific study where the author tries to convince the reader of the validity of his ideas and the invalidity of others and for this he uses a series of linguistic elements which enervate their claims and prescriptions.

  The methodology used is eclectic because, based on the quantitative examination of the attenuating elements, the argumentative technique of attenuating the modality of what is said is qualitatively discussed, since both perspectives are necessary for the study of the linguistic variation in the analysis of the discursive traditions.

  Considering this text as an argumentative, because it possesses the fundamental categories of these, theses and arguments, a quick review is made of the argumentative grammar formulated by Lo Cascio (1998), which is indubitably the starting point of this work.
