Resumen de Consent, not consultation: : Canadian First Nations seek more sway in mine permitting

Myles McCormick

  • "They [the First Nations] went to Mica Bay to stop the development of the mine," Chief Day explained. "There had been no consultation, no consideration given to the decisions that First Nations needed to make." The Robinson Huron deal was struck "in the context of sharing" according to Chief Day, rather than being an abdication of lands. "How would our people even comprehend accepting [less than they started with] when [the land] was ours in the first place? We were not a defeated people," he pointed out.

"This is important context for contemporary issues," Chief Day said. "Early history [of mining industry-First Nation relations] was one of treaty making and deal breaking from the Crown's perspective."
