Resumen de Jovellanos: traductor de poesía inglesa en Andalucía

  Jovellanos llega a Sevilla a sus 24 años, en marzo de 1768, y reside en la ciudad andaluza durante una década, desde que toma posesión de la Alcaldía del Crimen de la Real Audiencia de Sevilla. Se relaciona con Pablo de Olavide para cuya tertulia presenta a concurso El delincuente honrado. Esta comedia sentimental registra el influjo de Destouches, La Chausée y Diderot. En Sevilla aprende inglés, precisamente para poder disfrutar de la literatura en esa lengua. Se interesa por poetas anglosajones de la talla de Milton, Dryden, Pope o Young entre otros. En la ciudad hispalense es donde traduce el primer canto de Paradise Lost, elevando de esta forma un hito en la historia de la traducción en nuestro país. Este trabajo indaga el periodo andaluz del reformador neoclásico asturiano centrándose en la maestría aplicada al traducir los versos del republicano inglés y estudiando su valor precursor en la literatura española. Con esta contribución pretendemos mostrar parte del valor contenido en el legado de Jovellanos, poético e intercultural.

  Jovellanos arrived in Seville in March 1768, at the age of 24. He lived in the city for a decade, after gaining the position of Alcalde del Crimen in the Real Audiencia of Seville. There he came into contact with Pablo de Olavide, for whose tutelage he entered El delincuente honrado into a competition. This sentimental comedy shows the influence of Destouches, Chausee and Diderot. In Seville, Jovellanos learned English, in order to be able to enjoy English literature in its original language. He developed an interest in Anglo-Saxon poets such as Milton, Dryden, Pope and Young, among others. He translated the first canto of Paradise Lost while still living in Seville, marking a significant development in the history of translation in Spain. This study will investigate the Andalusian period of the Asturian neoclassical reformer, focusing specifically on his great skill in translating the work of Milton and examining its pioneering role in Spanish literature. With this contribution, we aim to demonstrate some of the great value of Jovellanos’ poetical and intercultural legacy.
