According to a report by local newspaper, El Longino, published in early January, deputy Hugo Gutierrez, who represents the Tarapaca region of northern Chile in the lower house of the Chilean Congress, has expressed concerns that SQM's activities may be breaching the company's Environmental Qualification Resolution (RCA) for the project.

SQM has dismissed Gutierrez's concerns as lacking "any real argument". "The company has made all mitigation measures to maintain natural water levels in Puquio [in the Salar de Llamara]," a company spokesperson told IM.
