    During a long time, the left/right cleavage has shaped the political identities of the French voters. But, the election of Emmanuel Macron and the historical drawbacks of the governing parties of the left and the right could have ended this way of taking side and defining oneself politically. In this article we test this possibility and mainly we question what does it mean to be on the left, on the right or elsewhere between the 1980’s and 2017. To do so, the analysis take into account the traditional sociological variables and the values dimensions. We demonstrate that left and right has been profoundly transformed because of the oppositions on the cultural and socioeconomical values.

    Longtemps, le clivage gauche/droite a façonné les identités politiques des Français. Pourtant, l’élection d’Emmanuel Macron, les très mauvais scores des partis de gouvernement de gauche et de droite pourraient marquer le déclin de ces manières de se positionner et de se penser en politique. Dans cet article, on s’interroge sur ce que signifie être de gauche, de droite ou d’ailleurs, entre les années 1980 et 2017. Pour ce faire, on teste la pertinence des grandes variables d’analyse sociologiques, mais aussi les dimensions de valeurs. On mesure ainsi combien la gauche et la droite se sont restructurées notamment autour des oppositions sur les valeurs culturelles et socio-économiques.
