    La cuestión de la herencia y su papel en el proceso de reproducción social y en la redefinición de las estructuras agrarias ha dado lugar a numerosos debates y trabajos en Francia. Si en un principio dicha cuestión se abordó gracias al estudio de las normas jurídicas, ahora se hace en cambio a partir de la realidad de las prácticas sucesorias, las cuales son examinadas y discutidas por los historiadores. Este trabajo trata de arrojar luz no solo sobre la diversidad de las formas de transmisión hereditaria que hubo en la Francia rural, sino también sobre las lógicas y las estrategias que subyacían tras las elecciones sucesorias que realizaban las familias. Conforme a ello, cuestiona los tópicos que los estudiosos de primera hora crearon sobre las familias que emplearon la partición igualitaria. Se acerca también a las reacciones de las distintas sociedades rurales frente a la ruptura con el pasado que supuso el desarrollo de la Revolución Francesa, y a las resistencias y estrategias hereditarias que éstas desarrollaron frente a la introducción del Código Civil. Constata así la enorme continuidad y plasticidad de las prácticas sucesorias en el tiempo; una plasticidad que demuestra que las familias fueron capaces de adaptar sus lógicas sucesorias a las cambiantes realidades socioeconómicas.

    Inheritance and its role in the process of social reproduction and the redefinition of agrarian structures has long been a subject of research and debate in France. Though it has traditionally long rested on the study of legal norms, historians have now begun to examine and write about how inheritance is managed. This article casts light on the different ways by which estates are passed on to successive generations, and also helps understand the logic followed by families and the strategies underlying their choices. It takes a new look at how families managed in regions where equal succession was the norm, a practice which — contrary to hoary legend — was in no way irresponsible. It reveals how societies reacted when the Revolution broke the mould and traces the many signs of resistance to the new legal system brought in with the Civil Code, as well as the compromises they made with it. It shows that when systems of inheritance and transmission between spouses changed, such transformations were rooted in gradual adaptations already under way, which prepared the way for these social changes. Finally, it confirms the abiding continuity of family practices over the long term and demonstrates their ability to adapt, showing that families fitted the law to the social and economic conditions they faced.
