Literatura traducida, garante de la diversidad lingüística y cultural: un viaje de ida y vuelta

    Throughout the history of translation, literature and literary translation have been two artistic expressions feeding off each other. In the case of the Asturian language, we observe from the rebirth of Asturian literature (Surdimientu) how the increase in translation has grown side by side with creation in their own language.

    In this study, we present some of the key aspects of translation and we focus on the analysis of translation from and to Asturian. Some of the issues we analyse refer to what it means to translate and, in this sense, we observe that the approach we take could be strictly linguistic or a more cultural and holistic approach. We are also interested in analysing the query «why and for whom is Asturian translated?», since this question will allow us to understand the translation situation between mother tongues that occurs between Spanish and Asturian, with everything that it implies.

    The question «why do we translate?» allows us to perform a diagnosis of the purpose of translating from and to Asturian. Reflecting on who translates helps us to emphasize the importance of the skills that the Asturian translators must have. The analysis on how to translate gives us a glimpse to some aspects about translation methodology in relation to Asturian language. Finally the matter of what is translated offers an overview of the translation from and to Asturian from the 1980’s to now.

    The analysis of all existing translations from Asturian to other languages (mainly Spanish, Catalan, Galician, Basque, French, Italian, English, German and Portuguese) and vice versa, allows us to observe the evolution in regard to the number of authors, translators, publishers and subjects. Some of the conclusions include the importance of patronage in translation in Asturias; the task of Asturian publishing houses; the presence of children’s and young-adult’s literature as one of the paths to consolidating the language, together with the translation of universal literature classics. Finally, all of this allows us to define the role of translation in this context.

    A lo llargo de la hestoria de la traducción, la lliteratura y la traducción lliteraria son dos manifestaciones artístiques que se retroalimenten. Nel casu del asturianu, reparamos dende’l Surdimientu cómo l’aumentu de la traducción foi tamién en paralelu al aumentu de la creación en llingua propia. Nel presente estudiu, presentamos dalgunos de los aspeutos claves de la traducción y centrámonos nel análisis de la traducción del y al asturianu. Dalgunes de les cuestiones qu’analizamos son qué ye traducir y nesti sen alvertimos que l’averamientu pue ser estrictamente llingüísticu o más cultural y holísticu. Tamién nos interesa analizar por qué y pa quién se traduz, porque esta entruga déxanos comprender la situación de traducción ente llingües maternes que se da ente castellanu y asturianu, con tolo qu’ello implica. La entruga de pa qué se traduz permítenos facer un diagnósticu de la función de la traducción del y al asturianu. Reflexonar sobro quién traduz encóntanos pa pescudar na importancia de les competencies que tienen que tener los traductores que trabayen col asturianu.

    L’análisis sobro cómo se traduz dexa entever dellos aspeutos sobro la metodoloxía de la traducción en rellación al asturianu. Y, zarrando, la cuestión de qué se traduz ufiértanos una panorámica de la traducción del y al asturianu dende los años 80 hasta güei. L’análisis de toles traducciones esistentes del asturianu a otres llingües (sobre manera castellanu, catalán, gallegu, euskera, francés, italianu, inglés, alemán y portugués) y viceversa, déxanos ver el desendolcu en cuantes al númberu d’autores, traductores, editoriales y temes trataos. Dalgunes de les conclusiones permítennos alvertir la importancia del mecenalgu na traducción n’Asturies; la xera de les editoriales asturianes; la presencia de la lliteratura infantil y xuvenil como una de les siendes del afitamientu de la llingua, xunto col de la traducción de los clásicos universales de la lliteratura y, caberamente, too ello déxanos definir cuál ye la función de la traducción nesti contestu.
