La presión sufrida por la costa española durante los siglos XVI y XVII por parte de corsarios y otros enemigos fue el motivo que indujo al establecimiento durante el reinado de Felipe II de un sistema de torres que defendieran el litoral inmediato y avisaran de los peligros que acechaban desde el mar. Cada uno de los sectores militares en que se dividía el litoral español tuvo actuaciones diferenciadas; la defensa del litoral murciano, y por tanto el de Lorca, fue planificada el año 1570 por una visita conjunta, con informes y conclusiones diferenciadas, de los ingenieros italianos Juan Bautista Antonelli y Vespasiano Gonzaga. Los dispositivos propuestos fueron parcialmente construidos y cumplieron su función defensiva hasta mediados del siglo XIX, a pesar de los intentos de sustitución por otras fortificaciones más potentes. Buena parte de las citadas fortificaciones han llegado hasta nuestros días y constituyen un conjunto monumental de arquitectura e ingeniería militar que testimonia medio milenio de historia.

The pressure suffered by the Spanish coastline in the 16th and 17th centuries on the part of corsairs and other enemies was the reason for building, during the reign of Felipe II, a system of coastal watchtowers to protect and warn the immediate coastline of the dangers coming from the sea. Each one of the military sectors in which the Spanish coast was divided had different works; the defense of the Murcia coastline, and therefore of Lorca, was planned in 1570 in a joint visit, with different reports and conclusions, of the Italian engineers Juan Bautista Antonelli y Vespasiano Gonzaga. The measures proposed were partially built and they carried out their defensive task until halfway through the 19th century, in spite of the attempts to replace them for more powerful fortifications. A large part of the aforementioned fortifications have survived to the present day and form a monumental site of military architecture and engineering that bears witness to half a millennium of history.
