  • Resumen
    • Deafness is a low incidence condition in children in many countries, but its implications for linguistic, cognitive and socio-emotional development are far reaching. In affluent countries such as the UK approximately 1 child in every 1 000 is born with a permanent degree of deafness rising to 2 per 1 000 by 9-1 6 years of age. However, up to a quarter of the world’s population have hearing loss, with deafness being much more common in low income countries. In at least a third this is associated with many additional neurological, physical and mental health problems.
