La política exterior española durante el primer tercio del siglo XX pasó por diversas fases. El tradicional aislamiento de finales del XIX acabó, dando paso a una etapa más aperturista, aunque todavía defensiva y neutral. Con el tiempo se produjo un acercamiento a Francia, lo que no supuso la participación de España en la Gran Guerra, manteniendo su neutralidad. Tras el conflicto armado, Madrid continuó con su tradicional política norteafricana, aunque con un papel más relevante como miembro de pleno derecho de la Sociedad de Naciones, aspecto que envalentonó a Primo de Rivera para defender un mayor peso del país en el ámbito internacional, resultando ser un fracaso

The Spanish foreign policy during the first third of the twentieth century went through several phases. The traditional isolation of the late nineteenth ended , giving way to a more openness stage, but still defensive and neutral. Eventually there was a rapprochement with France, which did not involve the participation of Spain in the Great War, maintaining its neutrality. After the armed conflict, Madrid continued its traditional North African politics, but with a more relevant role as a full member of the League of Nations, something that emboldened Primo de Rivera to defend a greater weight of the state in the international arena, proving to be a failure
