    Al comenzar la Primera Guerra Carlista la gran mayoría de los oficiales del ejército absolutista de Fernando VII tomaron partido por su hija. Ello no tenía porqué significar que fuesen liberales, sino tan sólo que habían obedecido las órdenes de su rey. Entre estos oficiales cabe destacar a Leopoldo O’Donnell, posiblemente el militar isabelino que a la largo de la contienda hizo una más brillante carrera, pues la comenzó como capitán a los 23 años, y seis años más tarde, cuando aún no había cumplido los treinta, era teniente general y jefe del ejército isabelino del Centro, puesto en el que logró hacer frente con éxito a Cabrera. Sin embargo, su brillante historial en esta guerra se ha visto oscurecido, cuando no olvidado, por la relevancia de sus éxitos en la campaña de África de 1859-1860.

    At de beginning of the First Carlist War the majority of the officials in the absolutist Army of Ferdinand the VIIth took party for the King’s daughter.

    This did not mean they were liberals, only they had obeyed their King’s command. Among these officials it is remarkable the figure of Leopoldo O’Donnell who is possibly the member of the Queen Elisabeth’s Army that during the war had the most outstanding career, as he started it as a captain at the age of 23 ad six years later, when he was not even thirty years old, he was lieutenant general and Commander in Chief of Central Queen Elizabeth’s Army, position in which he successfully confronted Cabrera. However his uncomparable military career in this war has been obscured, if not forgotten, by the relevance of his triumphs in the African Campaign in 1860.
