  Viene discussa la posizione sistematica di Trigonostoma umbilicare var. parvotriangula istituita da Sacco nel 1894 per identificare alcuni esemplari di Trigonostoma, rinvenuti nel Pliocene di Villalvernia (Alessandria, Piemonte), che si discostavano morfologicamente da T. umbilicare s.s. Il dimorfismo riscontrato ha indotto gli scriventi a prendere in considerazione la citata “varietà” come potenziale bona species. Nel tentativo di dirimere la questione, si è condotta un’analisi morfometrica approfondita su un discreto numero di esemplari di T. umbilicare e della sua “presunta” varietà. I risultati statistici ottenuti indicano che T. umbilicare var. parvotriangula è taxon distinto a livello specifico sotto la seguente denominazione: Trigonostoma parvotriangula Sacco, 1894. Le due specie T. umbilicare e T. parvotriangula risultano simpatriche essendo presenti contemporaneamente in alcuni affioramenti fossiliferi.

  The systematic position of Trigonostoma umbilicare var. parvotriangula is discussed. This variety, introduced by Sacco in 1894 on the basis of few specimens coming from the Pliocene of Villalvernia (Piedmont, Italy), has been scarcely reported in the literature and often regarded as a possible valid species.The rarity of findings has not allowed a full evaluation of the relationships existing between T. umbilicare and this supposed variety. The present availability of a large number of shells permitted to carry out a statistical analysis of both taxa based on some characteristics such as the total height of the shell, the height of the last whorl, the maximum diameter, the umbilicus extension, the average spiral angle, the subsutural plane inclination, the number of the axial ribs of the last whorl, the spiral ornamentation and, when possible, the protoconch structure. The results show that the variabilità range of T. umbilicare s.s. and T. umbilicarevar. parvotriangula are generally quite well separated. In consideration of that, it is proposed that the two taxa are specifically distinct and that the former “variety” must be named T. parvotriangula Sacco, 1894.
