    En el Archivo Secreto Vaticano se conserva una serie interesante de documentos por los que la Santa Sede solicitó a España, en 1860, la cesión o venta de una de sus baterías de artillería de montaña. Gestiones que el cardenal secretario de Estado, Giacomo Antonelli, dispuso que el nuncio en Madrid, monseñor Lorenzo Barili, activase con urgencia. ¿A qué se debía esta extraña y poco usual petición? ¿Qué estaba ocurriendo? ¿Por qué tanta urgencia? Este artículo pretende responder a estos interrogantes analizando dicha documentación y contextualizándola en el momento histórico en el que se producen los hechos. Momento en que el reino de Cerdeña, capitalizando el movimiento de independencia y unificación italiana, se anexiona los Estados Pontificios.

    The Vatican Secret Archives hold a group of interesting documents dealing with the request, in 1860, from the Holy See to Spain to transfer or sell one of its batteries of mountain artillery. The Cardinal Secretary of State, Giacomo Antonelli, stipulated that the request be dealt with urgently by the papal nuncio in Madrid, Monsignor Lorenzo Barili. Which were the reasons for such an unusual request? Which was the context? Why the urgency of the plea? This article seeks to answer those questions through the analysis of the documents and the assessment of the historical background. It was the time when the kingdom of Sardinia annexed the Papal States taking advantage of the Italian unification and independence movement.
