    En este artículo abordo un tema que ha sido poco trabajado en nuestra historiografía: me refiero a las terceras órdenes, específicamente a la dominica. Examino crónicas, documentos de archivo y bibliografía de diversa índole. Analizo la importancia que tuvo esta institución en la ciudad de México durante los últimos años del siglo XVII. Elegí esta temporalidad porque es el periodo en que la Tercera Orden de Santo Domingo tuvo presencia en la capital del virreinato novohispano. A lo largo del texto, considero por qué los terciariosdominicos tuvieron un auge justo en esos años; para ello resalto la  trascendencia que tuvo en este proceso la canonización de la limeña santa Rosa de Lima, notable tercera dominicana. Asimismo, indago en la relevancia que tuvieron algunas familias (por ejemplo los Medina Picazo y los Herrera) o algunos individuos (como Gonzalo Meléndez Carreño) en la consolidación de esta institución. Finalmente, se tratan las devociones que fomentaron y algunosproblemas a los que se enfrentaron.

    In this article I deal with a subject that has scarcely been mentioned in our historiography:

    the third orders, particularly the Dominican Order.I analyze chronicles, archive documents and different kinds of bibliography.I evaluate the importance this institution had in Mexico during the last years of the XVII century. I chose this time frame because it is the period when the Third Order of Saint Dominic was present in the capital of the new hispanic viceroyalty.

    Consideration is given in the text as to why the Dominican tertiaries reached a peak precisely in those years; to this end I highlight the importance that the canonization of Santa Rosa de Lima, a notable third Dominican, had in this process. Moreover, I inquire into the relevance some families (Medina Picazo and Herrera) or some individuals (like Gonzalo Meléndez Carreño) had in the strengthening of this institution. Finally, the devotions they created and the problems they faced are dealt with.
