The theory of social discourses offers a theoretical-methodological perspective which could be productively applied to the study of news discourse. From a social semiotics approach, this theory attempts to study meaning by looking at the social and historic conditions which influence the production of meaning. In this study, we propose understanding journalism as a semiotic practice which confers meaning on the references being dealt with by means of a series of discursive devices. The analysis of these discursive devices would constitute a good way of learning how social phenomena and objects acquire meaning when dealt with by the news.
