This article studies how the press in Barcelona dealt with a very specific political event, the referendum in Quebec on 30 October 1995. Our research is based on only four newspapers, Avui, El País, El Periódico and La Vanguardia. We chose the news regarding the Quebec referendum not only because it was an event which for a few days was the focus of a high degree of media attention all around the world, but also because, with regard to Catalonia in particular, it was followed with great attention, even passion, as is demonstrated by the quantity of articles of all kinds which appeared and which constitute the raw material with which we worked.
