San Nicolás de Bari: el primer Hospital construido en América (1503)

    El hospital de San Nicolás de Barí fue el primero construido en toda América por el gobernador Fray Nicolás Ovando. Las obras se iniciaron a fines de 1503 y no concluirían hasta 1508. A mediados del s. XVI el edificio fue remodelado y reforzado varias veces ampliándose su estructura y capacidad. Este hospital se sitúa en la zona colonial Dominicana, calle Hostos y fue planificado por el constructor Antonio Defilarete. De planta cruciforme, contaba con cuatro patios autónomos rodeados por dependencias. Disponía de tres naves, siendo la central construida en piedra exquisitamente trabajada, descuidando el resto de la obra por motivos económicos. En sus orígenes, el hospital de San Nicolás, tenía unas dimensiones muy pequeñas y escasa capacidad ya que solo disponía de seis camas pero, posteriormente, será ampliado y, en 1552, ya acomodaba a unos 60 enfermos y llegaba a atender a unos 700 enfermos al año. A partir de fines del s.XVIII se inicia la decadencia del Hospital y, muy especialmente, en la década de los sesenta y setenta del s.XIX, debido a los constantes sismos que sacudían la isla Dominicana y a la demolición de parte del edificio por personas particulares para aprovechar los materiales para una nueva construcción

    Saint Nicholas de Barí's hospital was the first one constructed in the whole America by the governor Fray Nicolás Ovando. The works began at the end of 1503 and they would not conclude until 1508. In the middle of XVIth century the building was remodelled and reinfor ced several times its structure and capacity being extended. This hospital places in the colonial Dominican zone, street Hostos and it was planned by the builder Antonio Defilarete. Of cruciform plant, it was possessing four autonomous courts surrounded by dependences. It had three ships, being the principal built in exquisitely worn out stone, neglecting the rest of the work for economic motives. In its origins, the hospital of Saint Nicholas, it had a few very small dimensions and scanty capacity because it only had six beds but, later, it will be extended and, in 1552, already it was accommodating approximate ly 60 patients and was managing to attend to approximately 700 patients a year. From ends of XVIIIth century the decadence of the Hospital began and, very specially, in the decade of the sixties and seventies of XIXth century, due to the constant earthquakes that were shaking the Dominican island and to the demolition on behalf of the building for particular persons to take advantage of the materials for a new construction.
