In this article we hope to present, on the one hand, a brief evaluation of some of the theoretical offerings which have tried to approach conceptually the phenomenon of information and, on the other hand, to defend a possible explanation of the process by which we are able to extract information from the world around us. To achieve these two objectives, we llave divided the article into two sections. In the first, we by to give a brief description of the main ideas contained in what has been called the "Mathematical Theory of Communication". In the second, we attempt to present and evaluate two of the principal semantic analyses of informative content: the proposal defended by Dretske and that which is known as the "Relational Theory of Meaning". In conclusion, using the conceptual advantages of the latter proposal, we introduce what could be a possible explanation of that facet of learning in which we consolidate the capacity to extract absent information by the means of present signals.
