First records of the diamondback squid Thysanoteuthis Rhombus in Asturian waters (Northeastern Atlantic)

    En esta nota se informa de los tres primeros registros del calamar losange (Thysanoteuthis rhombus) en aguas asturianas. El 15 de Septiembre de 2005 se capturó una hembra de 650 mm de longitud del manto (LM) varada moribunda en la playa de Salinas (43º34'50"N-5º57´8"W). El segundo y el tercer registro (macho de 682 mm de LM) ocurrieron el 16 y 21 de Julio de 2006 en las playas de la Palmera y Xivares, respectivamente. Estos registros, junto con el de cinco nuevas especies de peces subtropicales en esas costas, sugieren que el calentamiento de las aguas debido al cambio climático sería la principal razón de las modificaciones que la fauna marina asturiana esta experimentando.

    We inform that diamondback squid (Thysanoteuthis rhombus) has been recorded for the first time in the Asturian waters (NE Atlantic). A female (650 mm mantle length; ML) was found dying and stranded in the Salinas's beach (43º34'50"N-5º57´8"W. Asturias, Spain) on 15th Septiembre 2005. The second and third records (male 682 mm and female 685 mm ML) ocurred on 16th and 21st July 2006 in Palmera and Xivares beaches, respectively. These three records, joint with the presence of five new records of subtropical fish for the Asturian coast, seems to indicate that warming of the waters due to the Climate Change is the principal reason of the modifications that the marine Asturian fauna is experiencing.
