The main reason why Juliet Mitchell and Judith Butler are in opposition is their very different subject of study: the oppress of women for Juliet Mitchell, the discrimination against the homosexual people for Judith Butler. This first choice determines the viewpoint of the argumentation: the materialist perspective for Mitchell who insists on the specific situation of women and their fight, an culturalist one for Butler who only is concerned for the increasing in the number of differences. To make clear the stake of this opposition, I refer to the so relevant analysis of Monique Wittig.

Juliet Mitchell et Judith Butler se distinguent par leur objet d’analyse respectif : si la première s’intéresse à l’oppression des femmes, la deuxième s’emploie à dénoncer et surmonter la discrimination qui frappe les homosexuel∙le∙s. Ce choix de l’objet d’analyse donne le ton de l’argumentation : alors que Juliet Mitchell propose une analyse matérialiste et insiste sur la spécificité de la lutte des femmes, Judith Butler développe une argumentation de type culturaliste et se satisfait de la multiplication des différences. Pour mieux saisir l’enjeu de ce débat, il m’a semblé intéressant de faire intervenir les arguments développés par Monique Wittig.
