Francisco Bilbao y la educación en Chile: una problemática vigente

    Las demandas que identifican al actual movimiento estudiantil (educación gratuita, de calidad, laica y no sexista) estaban presentes muchos años antes en la mente de Francisco Bilbao, intelectual chileno del s. XIX quien proponía, entre otras medidas, suprimir la autoridad de la Iglesia Católica sobre los organismos gubernamentales de Chile y, en especial, eliminar la influencia que ésta ejercía en las instituciones educativas. Según Bilbao, la educación debía ser laica y gratuita, de carácter filosófico y garantizada por la Constitución y esto no solo se debe cumplir en Chile, sino que en Latinoamérica. Así, este trabajo tiene como objetivo exponer las propuestas de Francisco Bilbao respecto a la educación chilena de la época, evaluar sus soluciones y, a la vez, invitar a la reflexiónsobre el sistema educativo actual: ¿Seguimos insertos en un sistema educativo que, como identifica Bilbao, es una herencia de los preceptos españoles traídos con la conquista?

    The demands that identify the current student movement in Chile (quality, secular, nonsexist and free education) have been present for many years in the mind of Francisco Bilbao, Chilean thinker, whose period of intellectual production was in the nineteenth century. Bilbao proposed, among others things, the suppression of the Catholic Church’s authority in governmental institutions and particularly, in its educational institutions. According to this thinker, education must be secular, free, philosophical in nature, and guaranteed by the constitution — not only in Chile but in all of Latin America. Thus, this paper aims to expose the proposals of Francisco Bilbao regarding the Chilean educationof the time, evaluate their solutions and, at the same time, invite reflection on the current educational system: Are we still within an educational system that, as Bilbao identified, is inherited from Spanish precepts brought to Chile through conquest?
