Sobre as noções ‘nativo’/não nativo’: uma dicotomia perigosa para o inglês global?

    A number of writers (Singh et al.,1995; Rajagopalan, 1997) have arguedconvincingly that the notion ‘native speaker’ can be racist and exclusive,bestowing privilege and power based on the accident of nativity in a specificlocale. I argue that the concept is still useful in the field of applied linguists andlanguage studies provided that researchers clarify the ambiguity of the term.I propose following typology for clarification of the concept: the (a) ‘age ofacquisition native’, (b) ‘loyalty native’, (c) ‘objective-proficiency native’ (d)the Chomskyan ‘ideal native speaker’, (e) ‘blood native’ and (f) the ‘historicalantecedence-native’.

    Alguns especialistas (Singh et al., 1995; Rajagopalan, 1997) argumentam compropriedade que a noção de “falante nativo” pode ser racista e excludente,atribuindo privilégio e poder com base no fato de ter nascido num determinadolugar. Defendo que o referido conceito ainda procede no campo de linguísticaaplicada e dos estudos da linguagem, contanto que os pesquisadores esclareçamsua ambiguidade. Proponho a seguinte topologia para esclarecer o sentido de“falante nativo”: (i) aquele que adquiriu o idioma desde o berço; (ii) aqueleque afirma lealdade ao idioma em questão, mas pouco ou nada fala; (iii) aqueleque se considera “nativo” com base em critérios objetivos de proficiência; (iv)o “falante nativo ideal” chomskiano; (v) aquele que se declara ser com basena etnia e no sangue; (vi) aquele que fala uma variedade de prestígio de umdeterminado idioma.
