    In this paper, we use classical theory about the nature of names and discuss ina historiographical way the philosophical thoughts that began these studies,starting from the Platonists in “Cratylus”, through Whitney’s discussion upto the always contemporary studies of Saussure. These authors discuss ifthe names are formed by natural justice (Physei) or by convention (Thesei).We relate this discussion to the toponymical names in the municipalities ofMaranhão state. We then inter-relate the influence of the formal structure of thelinguistic sign to the object that it represents in the process of naming.

    Neste trabalho, partimos da teoria clássica sobre a natureza dos nomes eprocuramos discorrer historiograficamente acerca dos pensamentos filosóficosque iniciaram esses estudos, desde os platônicos, na obra “Crátilo”, passandopela discussão de Whitney até os sempre atuais estudos de Saussure, autoresque discutem se os nomes são formados por motivação natural (Physei) oupor convenção (Thesei). Relacionamos essa discussão aos nomes toponímicosdos municípios do Estado do Maranhão, em que procuramos inter-relacionara influência da estrutura formal do signo linguístico com o objeto que elerepresenta no processo de nomeação.
